Learn how to track calories in homemade pakistani food
Learning how to track calories in homemade pakistani food starts with understanding your own kitchen—not finding a perfect biryani entry in an app. Oil, flour, meat cuts and serving sizes vary between households, so the most useful numbers come from the ingredients your family actually uses.
Coach Usman is a Level 3 Personal Trainer and weight loss coach based in Gujranwala. His 1:1 online coaching helps men across Pakistan and overseas build a practical eating and workout routine around home cooking, work and family life.
See plans & pricesWho this approach is for
This is for men who want to lose weight but eat from a shared family pot. You might take leftover salan to the office, eat dinner after closing your shop, or depend on whatever is cooked at home.
You do not need a separate menu or control over every ingredient. The aim is to measure what you can, make sensible estimates where needed, and develop a consistent method instead of starting again every Monday.
How to track calories in homemade pakistani food: start with the recipe
For a dish you cook regularly, weigh the ingredients before cooking. Record the oil, meat, lentils, rice, vegetables and other ingredients that contribute calories. Match each weight to the correct food entry: dry rice needs a dry-rice entry, not a cooked-rice entry.
Add the ingredient calories to get the recipe total. After cooking, weigh the finished food without the pot. Divide total calories by cooked weight to calculate calories per gram, then multiply by the grams you serve. Water changes the dish’s weight, but does not add calories.
Measure oil and portions before chasing perfect numbers
A free-poured splash of oil is difficult to estimate. Measuring the oil added to a family karahi or daal gives you a more useful starting point. Include the tadka, ghee spread on roti, and sugar or milk added to tea.
For example, if a recipe totals 2,400 calories and weighs 1,600 grams after cooking, it contains 1.5 calories per gram. A 300-gram portion would be approximately 450 calories. This assumes ingredients are distributed reasonably evenly; a serving with extra meat or oil can differ.
Make roti, rice and shared salan easier to log
For roti, record the dry atta used for a batch and divide by the number of similar-sized rotis made. Count any added oil or ghee separately. If sizes vary widely, divide the dough into equal portions before rolling for more consistent estimates.
For rice, calculate the whole recipe and weigh your cooked serving. With bone-in chicken salan, avoid treating bones as edible meat. Keep your method consistent, and recognise that uneven meat pieces and gravy make shared-pot estimates less precise than evenly mixed dishes.
A desi diet approach that fits your household
Your custom desi diet plan can include familiar meals such as daal, sabzi, chicken salan, rice, roti and dahi. Rather than banning everyday foods, coaching helps you adjust portions and build meals with suitable protein, vegetables and an amount of food that fits your goal.
Gujranwala summers can make cooking and training feel harder, while late work finishes can push dinner back. A useful plan considers those realities, along with chai breaks, Friday family lunches and restaurant meals. Tracking should support your routine, not require you to avoid social eating.
What 1:1 online coaching includes
You use the My Coach app for your assessment, custom desi diet plan, workout plan, weekly check-ins and chat with Coach Usman. The assessment helps establish your starting point, food preferences, work schedule and available training equipment.
The coaching process also gives you support with practical tracking questions: which recipe entry to use, how to estimate a family meal, and what to do when your food log feels inconsistent. Your workout plan is built around your circumstances rather than assuming daily gym access.
How the coaching process works
Start with an assessment through the My Coach app. Share your usual meals, goals and training routine so your plan reflects how you actually live. Begin with repeat meals where measurement is easiest, instead of trying to catalogue your entire kitchen immediately.
At weekly check-ins, review your progress, consistency and difficulties with the coach. Your plan can be adjusted as needed. Chat provides a way to raise questions between check-ins, including how to handle changing work hours, travel or a recipe someone else prepares.
Online coaching cost compared with gym trainers in Pakistan
Monthly coaching costs Rs 25,000. The 6-Month option costs Rs 125,000 as a one-time payment, equivalent to approximately Rs 20,833 per month. Both are 1:1 online coaching options, with payment by card through Stripe.
Gym trainer fees in Pakistan vary by location, session frequency and what is included. Ask whether a quote covers gym membership, food planning and support outside sessions. Online coaching offers meal planning, workouts and ongoing review, but not in-person supervision. For questions before joining, email support@coachusman.com.

Start coachingFAQ
How do I track calories when my mother or wife cooks?
Ask to measure ingredients for one usual batch, especially oil and flour or rice. Save that recipe as a starting estimate. If the recipe changes, update it when possible rather than assuming every batch is identical.
Can I use a generic homemade biryani entry?
Yes, as a rough estimate when recipe details are unavailable. Choose an entry that resembles your portion and ingredients. For biryani cooked regularly at home, a saved household recipe is usually more useful than switching between unrelated entries.
Do I need a kitchen scale for every meal?
A kitchen scale helps when building recipes and learning portions. You do not have to weigh food at every gathering. Use measured meals to develop familiar serving references, while accepting that visual estimates have more uncertainty.
How should I log chai during an office day?
Record the milk and sugar used in each cup, or create a saved entry for your usual preparation. Count repeated cups across the day. If someone else makes it, ask about the recipe and use a consistent estimate.
What if I cannot measure food at a family dinner?
Estimate the main items and portions as reasonably as you can, then return to your usual routine at the next meal. One uncertain entry does not make the whole week useless. Avoid presenting a rough estimate as an exact number.
Can I join from outside Gujranwala or Pakistan?
Yes. Coach Usman coaches men online across Pakistan and overseas through the My Coach app. Your plan can account for local food availability and work patterns while keeping familiar Pakistani meals where practical.
